This project aims to build on recent developments in non contacting stress measurement using Alternating Current Stress Measurement (ACSM) for the detection and measurement of near surface residual stress. Recent research by the proposers has demonstrated that ACSM is a reliable method fc the measurement of applied stress in steel bars. A major step has already been achieved in a recent ROPA project which demonstrated changes in the ACSM signal in shot peened steel plates subjected to fatigue loading. These changes are likely to be related to the phenomenon of Vibration Stress Relief or Residual Stress Decay under stress cycling. If ACSM is indeed capable of measuring near surface residual stresses, it would be a portable, non contacting and cheap way of monitoring residual stress for industry.The methodology to be employed in the project will use analytical electromagnetic theory in parallel with an experimental programme varying material characteristics, surface residual stress and sensor parameters to further the understanding of the mechanisms involved. In addition, controlled hole drillingusing electrical resistance strain gauges will be used to verify the magnitude and nature of residual stress.KeywordsMechanics, Materials, Sensors, Residual Stress, Electromagnetic
