Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal addresses the need for new crosslinking systems for use in water-borne coatings. This need has become more evident in recent years due to environmental pressures forcing the coatings industry to seek alternatives to the conventional solvent-borne coating systems. Our current EPSRC-funded project in this area has shown that new functional monomers containing the hydroxyethylsulfone group can be synthesized and used in emulsion copolymerization with standard monomers (e.g. acrylates, methacrylates, styrene, etc.) and commercially-available functional monomers (e.g. with hydroxyl or acetoacetoxy groups) to prepare latex copolymers in which the particles contain all the functional groups necessary for crosslinking, i.e. one-part crosslinkable latexes. During film formation from the latex, the loss of water triggers dehydration of the hydroxyethylsulfone groups to give vinyl sulfone groups which readily react with pendent hydroxyl or acetoacetoxy groups, thereby forming crosslinks. Crosslinking can be monitored indirectly (principally by determining thermal and mechanical properties) and directly (principally by spectroscopic methods). The scope and application of this technology will be substantially extended from the current work to encompass a range of new hydroxyethylsulfone monomers and emulsion polymer systems. This work will be of value to all latex manufacturers and formulators with interests in crosslinkable coatings.
