Summary on Grant Application Form |
The use of reclaimed tyre crumb as a low cost modifier to produce dry process crumb rubber modified (CRM) asphalt mixtures has the potential to improve the performance of asphalt mixtures while reducing the environmental impact of waste tyres. The research described in this proposal is aimed at improving the understanding of the chemical and mechanical interactions that occur between crumb rubber particles and bitumen within CRM asphalt mixtures.A large proportion of the research will be based around a laboratory study of the chemical and mechanical reactions that occur during the production and service life of dry process CRM asphalt mixtures. Particular emphasis will be placed on the use of cold mix versus hot mix technologies to control any adverse reactions between the rubber crumbs and binders. The fundamental mechanical properties of a range of CRM asphalt mixtures will be determined using both the Nottingham Asphalt Tester and a 4-point bending test.In addition, larger scale laboratory testing and full scale field trials will be undertaken to validate the laboratory study and enable future monitoring of field performance. The final stage of the project will be to assimilate the results and develop design guidelines for dry process CRM materials.
