Summary on Grant Application Form
The applicants have carried out and published feasibility studies sufficient to justify further exploitation of the cone-jet mode of electrostatic atomization for ceramic suspensions. Extremely small near-monodispersed droplets (1-3um in diameter) can be produced using relatively large nozzles (~250 um diameter) and a variety of formulations - ceramic suspensions, sols and precursor solutions, will be subjected to this process. The first stage of the work will establish the composition of the formulations in conjunction with the droplet formation process variables. Maps of material property ranges (viscosity, conductivity, surface tension and evaporation rate) for atomization in the cone-jet mode will be thus developed and droplet relics will be characterized. The process will be used to produce mixed oxide powders using sols and non-oxide ceramic powders and their blends using precursor solutions. The ceramic suspensions, in particular PZT and zirconia sols will be used to spray thin coatings in the cone-jet mode.
