Summary on Grant Application Form |
Versatile new methods for the synthesis of chiral compounds as single enantiomers underpin modern chemistry in both the industrial (pharmaceutical) and academic sectors. We are proposing to develop a general asymmetric synthesis of a relatively unstudied class of axially chiral compound by desymmetrising achiral precursors. We aim to collaborate with other members of our COST-D12 Network to identify successful bases which allow efficient and high-yielding desymmetrisation. We shall then convert the products to potentially valuable targets, such as ligands for asymmetric reactions, or chiral photosensitisers. Evaluation of the targets will be carried out in collaboration with other groups within and outside the Network. We shall use the equipment requested to determine the anantiomeric excess of the targets and of the products resulting from their use as metal ligands, and to determine the stability of racemisation of rotationally restricted targets from our own group and from other groups within the Network.
