The medical imaging technique of positron emission tomography (PET) is being expolited only at Birmingham for engineering studies involving granular or multi-phase flow. The unique ability to make measurements on real industrial systems has gained widespread international recognition. The new positron camera which has just been purchased through JREI scheme enormously extends the power of the technique to study fast-moving systems. The Positron Imaging Centre has its own in-house cyclotron which is used to produce the necessary range of short-lived radiotracers. An extensive network of users , both academic and industrial, has already been developed. The major limitation in developing the Centre is now lack of staff, particularly those associated with tracer production and software development. This proposal will remedy this, establishing the Positron Imaging Centre on a secure footing as a national resource for engineering studies.
