Summary on Grant Application Form
Building on our expertise of (conductive) polyaniline fibre spinning we aim to improve the spinning process to produce continuous, high quality multifilament fibre which can be used in a variety of new applications. We shall scale up this process by fully parameterising multifibre spinning, characterise the best conditions for shear orientation during spinning to achieve high strength and conductivity and design new in-line post spinning processes to yield very high strength fibres. A commercial winding system will be incorporated into our spinning rig. We shall study the effect of spinnerette design and orifice dimension on the properties of the polyaniline fibres to determine the best design for the spinnerette. Optimisation of the extrussion rate, coagulation time and temperature, take up tension and die swell ration will be undertaken. Correlations between fibre strength and crystallinity will be made and new polyaniline-acid dopant-solvent-coagulent systems investigated to maximise crystallisation and effective interchain hydrogen bonding. From initial trials of our fibres by end users results will be fed back into the fibre production studies to help improve the fibres for their chosen applications.
