Summary on Grant Application Form |
Composites containing nickel particles with angular surface features display unique electrical properties. Preliminary studies indicate that conduction is dominated by electron tunnelling from the tips of these features. The properties of composites containing commercially available powders with different particle morphology and mean size dispersed in well-characterised polymer hosts at different metal loading will be studied to test this hypothesis. Pre-treatment of the metal powders will be used to modify the asperity of the surface features, the mean particle size and the nature of the surface species on the particles. The effect of different pre-treatments on the composites will be investigated. Literature methods will be used to prepare gold and nickel nano-particles. The effects of the incorporation of the nano-particles on the properties of the composites will be evaluated. The morphology and size distribution of the particles dispersed in the composites will be determined by SEM and TEM observations. The use of thin films of these composites, wither as prepared or coated with a permeable polymer layer, as vapour sensors will be explored. The research will be conducted in collaboration with Peratech Ltd a start-up SME.
