The goal of this proposal is to investigate the resistance of acetabular bone-implant interfaces to osteolysis. There are numerous references alluding to the importance of forming an effective seal between the bone and implant to prevent the migration of wear particles and subsequent osteolysis and implant loosening, however hard evidence on the sealing effect of different interfaces is sparse and anecdotal. The question that we intend to ask is whether different interfaces around acetabular components are more or less effective in preventing wear particle induced osteolysis? We hypothesise that the resistance of the acetabular interface to osteolysis and loosening depend on the cup surface. In this study, we aim to use our animal model previously shown to induce wear activated osteolysis in a total hip replacement through accelerated polyethylene acetabular wear. Bone ingrowth and attachment will be investigated to grit blasted, porous titanium, HA coated grit blasted, HA coated porous titanium and porous tantalum acetabular surfaces after one year in vivio. The non-HA coated surfaces will also represent a situation where the HA coating has resorbed from the acetabular surface. The mechanical stability of each interface will be measured to predict loosening and interfaces will be investigated histologically and radiographically. The wear of the UHMWPE liner and the amount and morphology of wear particles within the capsule surrounding the hip replacement will also be measured to ensure that each hip had been challenged with the same burden of wear particles.EngProg\
