Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this research is to develop new experimental techniques in coherent laser control of electron impact ionisation, which will provide new data for comparison with theoretical models. This research will study ionisation from laser aligned and oriented excited atoms over a wide range of scattering geometries for the first time. A stabilised CW TI: Sapphire laser will excite potassium to a state controlled by the power, polarisation and direction of the laser beam. These excited targets will be ionised by electron impact, the scattered and ejected electrons being momentum analysed in the fully computer controlled and optimised (e,2e) spectrometer at Manchester. Ionisation from laser excited atoms from coplanar to the perpendicular plane geometry will be studied.Of particular interest are interference minima in the ionisation cross section as first observed at Manchester. Sine the initial state of the laser excited atoms can be varied, these interferences will also vary. By studying these effects as a function of the laser parameters, scattering geometry and impact energy, new information about the cause of these quantum mechanical interferences will be obtained.
