Summary on Grant Application Form
Scanning acoustic microscopy and scanning kelvin probe will be used together to characterise adhesion loss/blistering and electrochemical activity beneath organic coatings on metals (chiefly steel). These complimentary techniques will be used to image areas of adhesion loss and map potential distributions beneath the coating. The work will seek to understand how the properties of the coating, as determined by the nature of the polymer and the choice of anti-corrosive or barrier pigments, influence processes at the coating-metal interface. Coatings containing deliberate defects and those without will be examined. Macro-cells of controlled geometry will be created using zinc-coated substrates with areas of exposed steel.
