Summary on Grant Application Form |
We are planning to measure the effect of a change of sign of the magnetic field and/or the orbital texture on the threshold field for the Freedericksz transition in order to detect and determine the spontaneous ferromagnetic moment of superfluid 3He-A. Our rotating cryostat will perform a vital role in this experimarnt in enabling us to obtain and check the theory of orbital dynamics in3He-A.We plan to demonstrate that reletive spin-orbit symmetry is spontaneously broken in in 3He-B by showing thst it is possible to generate spin waves by mechanical methods. A transducer will be used to generate a local rotation of the normal fluid. The resulting magnetization will be detected using a dc SQUID.We will continue our programme of work on 3He in aerogel. The main intention is to study the effects if rotation to see if it is possible to produce quantized vortex lines or persistent currents.
