This project seeks to apply recently developed mass observation and objective measurement techniques to retail store layout and design. Computer simulation is used to model detailed customer behaviour when browsing and selecting merchandise, and the effects of layout on that behaviour. There are three main phases to this research. The first is to identify and measure the extent to which the major internal design features, such as fixtures, entrances and walkways, influence customer shopping behaviour in specified retail store layouts. Secondly, by collecting customer movement data in real time it will allow the measurement of actual in-store customer behaviour. Once data collection has taken place the research will, in the third phase create a virtual retail environment based on a real life setting using sophisticated computer-based modelling software. For the retailer the main advantages of this research are to gain new knowledge of the dynamics of customer movement, staff scheduling and demand management. For example, customers often suffer from high levels of shopping stress due to poorly designed layouts. Customers would benefit from the resulting logical, bottleneck free shopping environment.
