Summary on Grant Application Form |
At the instigation of Queen's University, Belfast, Durham University manufactured seven strain gauged reinforcing bars which were installed in April 1998 as part of the reinforcement at the sixth floor level of the full scale, seven storey, reinforced concrete building at the Cardington facility of the Building Research Establishment (BRE). These bars were funded through BRE by a 7000 grant from EPSRC.A programme service level load testing using short term loading was undertaken in December 1998, funded by EPSRC (Grant GR/M47478). Numerical modelling of these testshas been completed by Arup Research and Development. This proposal is to continue the work to investigate the effects of long-term loading over a two year period. Results will be related to a further programme of numerical modelling to be undertaken by Arups. At the end of this second round of testing valuable data will have been obtained concerning the long-term behaviour of flat slabs. In addition, further useful experience will have been gained of testing at full-scale which will be particularly valuable when planning the ultimate load tests scheduled in around two years time.
