Summary on Grant Application Form
This project addresses two key related issues that are central to enhancing trust and reliability of digital documents: development of an intelligent secure document model based on object oriented technologies and the integration of biometrics-activated encryption as an integral part of the document distribution architecture. The programme of work will seek to develop a generic structure for multimedia documents allowing for arbitrary components of text, hypertext, audio video etc. Within the document. Access to these components will also be controlled by encryption based on biometric information removing the need for users to recall access information such as passwords or PIN numbers. Different security levels within the document may also have different encryption mechanisms allowing selected access to components of the document. The incorporation of the concept of metaclasses within the document will allow the encryption mechanisms themselves to be an integral part of the document and may themselves be modified by a appropriately authorised user. The work programme will specifically entail developing object oriented document models, examine techniques for encryption and key management, develop strategies for user authentication and include techniques for document tracking and editing.
