Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal concerns a fundamental study of crystal nucleation and growth in high volume fraction, two phase emulsion systems. The objective of the work is to explore the possibility of preparing novel composite materials in which an active dispersed phase is located within a porous crystal network formed by controlled nucleation and growth in the continuous phase of an emulsion. The importance of crystal morphology, templated nucleation, disperse phase volume and size, and surfactant choice on the preparation and properties of the such crystal networks will be studied using a range of techniques including ultrasound velocity measurement, scanning Raman microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, microhardness indentation and mechanical testing.
