Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim is to form a network of the main UK groups participating in the areas of theory and modelling in magnetism. The UK has considerable expertise in this area. Given the nature of the problems covered, which require different approximations and compromises and different lengthscales, there has been a tendency for the formation of separate communities to work on problems in isolation. However, the development of advanced magnetic materials relies increasingly on macroscopic magnetic properties, which requires the pooling of the expertise available within each community. The network has the aim of providing a forum wherein these collaborations can develop. The network will function in a number of ways. Firstly it is intended to organise scientific meetings to encourage discussion especially among students and PDRAs. This use of small topical meetings will also be made in order to discuss important ideas in detail. It is also intended to encourage mobility via the provision of funds for visiting researchers. The exchange of information will also be facilitated via a web site and a pre-print exchange scheme.
