This project seeks to quantify the variability of adsorption parameters that control pollution transport through contaminated sites as a means of enhancing risk assessment and improving risk-based management of sites. The project will apply state-of-the-art chemical methods (inc solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) to characterising the highly variable adsorption properties of soils and understanding how this variability affects adsorption behaviour and movement of contaminants at field scale. Laboratory adsorption experiments will be used to determine adsorption parameters for a large number of soil samples taken within contaminated sites, and Bayesian statistical techniques will be used as a means of linking predictions of adsorption variability for a range of organic pollutants to measurable site parameters. The project will deliver a generic methodology for assessing adsorption variability at field scale, and implementing its impact on containment movement, into standard risk assessment tools for contaminated land.
