Summary on Grant Application Form |
The requested resources would equip the Corrostion and Coatings Group in the Department of Materials Engineering with a suite of analytical instrumentation that would be the cornerstone of a range of existing EPSRC supported Postdoctoral research and research programs under the EPSRC EngD and IGDS schemes. These include:* The development of new ceramic ion exchange corrosion inhibitors for coated steel applications.* The successful development of new organic coatings with minimal environmental impact (enabling accurate determination of metallic and organo metallic leachates)* Producing new methods for recycling organically coated strip products at end of life* Assessing the environmental impact of metallic leaching from a wide variety of organic and metallic coated materials* Kinetic and mechanistic understanding of the processes of de-tinning leading to successful development of two piece food can technologyThe instrument will enable new programmes to be developed, which will not be possible using current ICP AES facilities. These include:* New realistic corrosion testing methodologies for coated metal products* The development of chromium free inhibitors for the aerospace industry* Non invasive methods for removal of trace metal leachates in landfill run offIn addition the facility will foster closer research ties between academia (Swansea University), Industry (BAe Systems, Corus and Akzo Nobel) and a variety of public and industrial bodies (e.g. Wales Waste Management and the Galvanisers Association).
