Summary on Grant Application Form
The new NMR spectrometer will provide essential support for a wide range of projects across the traditional areas of chemistry; organic, inorganic and physical, as well as interdisciplinary projects involving materials science and biochemistry. The spectrometer will replace ageing equipment, will provide much improved sensitivity an versatility, will give a completely new solid state NMR service, and will be installed in the new Chemistry building at QMW. The projects include: solid state NMR structural characterisation of novel phosphate-based glasses and ceramics which have potential use as bone and dental implants; characterisation of porous functionalised silicas and polysilsesquioxane polymers. In addition a number of projects are highlighted from younger members of the academic staff who are in a 'star-up' situation, in the first year or two of their independent academic careers.
