Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to use single crystal neutron diffraction to extend our understanding of both strong, and particularly, weak hydrogen bonding and its influence in the assembly of supermolecular structure. This proposal concerns a request for neutron beam time on SXD, at ISIS and support of a postgraduate student at Durham where they will be trained in chemical crystallography using low temperature x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques. We will study the temperature dependence of these interactions and thereby hope to monitor the interplay of these forces the solid state. We shall investigate topical modes of weak intermolecular interactions such as C-H---pi, N-H----pi, O-H----pi, pi---pi and Halogen---Halogen, which is an area not all rich in neutron diffraction studies.
