The principle aim of the project is to design, construct and evaluate a novel portable imaging system for diagnostic procedures in Nuclear Medicine. The system will be constructed from a state-of-the-art, highly -segmented, planar germanium detector capable of achieving high spatial and energy resolution. This detector will be developed by the two research teams in collaboration with a leading manufacturer of radiation detectors. The ability to produce images will be achieved by the use of the Compton Scatter Camera principle, representing a new approach to Compton Camera design.The aim of the system design is to produce a compact, portable 3D imaging system that can be brought to the patient - a desirable feature in certain clinical situations. This is not possible with currently existing technology for imaging 511 keV gamma rays from positron isotopes.Both the medical imaging system and the germanium detector technology will prove beneficial to a variety of end-users.
