The College aims to support and encourage multi-disciplinary research between its constituent Schools and to strengthen interaction between the various disciplines with interests in the physical and life sciences and medical application areas. The College wishes to facilitate such interaction by the formation of the proposed Multidisciplinary Research Centre and acquisition of the equipment requested, which would harness science and engineering expertise and enhance multi-disciplinary research in this area. The Centre would provide the infrastructure for bringing together existing expertise under a common umbrella and a catalyst and opportunities for inter-school collaboration to produce significant and novel research. The College views the present initiative as an extremely timely opportunity to create such a Centre and provide a coherent research theme linking various strands of research on complex fluids across the science schools. The emphasis of the proposed research is to study complex fluids from the microscopic level, the characteristic length scales that govern the macroscopic behaviour, to the full-scale flows. There are three essential components of research in the proposed Centre, namely determination of intermolecular or surface forces, structural characterisation, microrheology and fluid flows. Each component includes both experimental and theoretical studies. To enable this challenging task to be accomplished, it is necessary to acquire suitable state-of-the-art equipment which is complementary to that existing within the College.
