The proposal seeks support for a three year study to apply nonlinear dynamics modelling to sigma-delta analogue-to-digital convertors (ADCs) in communications applications. The study would build on our previous work in a similar area, supported by DERA Fort Halstead, in which discrete Melnikov methods have been used to predict bifurcation and chaotic behaviours in PLL FM discriminators, with experimental verification by means of prototype circuits, comparison with commercial equipment and a computer-based test facility.The scope of this programme is two-fold. Firstly to explore mathematical methods with which to model such ADCs and predict likely conditions leading to instability and, ultimately, suitable rationales to achieve optimum designs; secondly, to set up a computer-based test facility to support the modelling activity and develop an optimised design suitable for use with software radios in which DERA Malvern have an interest. The work will be undertaken by two postdoctoral research assistants: one based at Dundee, primarily performing mathematical modelling; the other based at UCL primarily developing and evaluating prototype sigma-delta ADCs and producing an optimised software radio design. There will also be assistance from a member of staff at DERA Fort Halstead, which will register as a part-time external PhD student at UCL.
