The visit aims to research two different hybrid approaches, combining either stochastic or statistical methods with deterministic approaches.The first approach will be to incorporate interval analysis and adaptive discretization procedures within stochastic methods. In particular, we will look at both genetic algorithms and simulated annealing. Foe generic algorithms, interval analysis and adaptive discretization will be used to define the genetic operators, crossover and mutation, so as to increase the efficiency of the genetic algorithm. Targeting the operators will be used to reduce, if not eliminate, the possibility of generating infeasible solutions. In simulated annealing, the deterministic procedures will be used to identify the neighbourhood of a current solution, again with the aim of eliminating the generation of infeasible solutions.The second approach will incorporate statistical analysis methods into a deterministic branch and bound procedure. This will improve the likelihood of choosing the correct branch, increasing the efficiency of the method.A case study on oil stabilisation will be used as the motivating problem.
