Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed work aims at developing a systematic, optimisation-based, framework for the optical process plant layout problem. This framework will be based on a continuous-domain representation, which can describe adequately realistic characteristics of the layout problem. While some progress has been made for single-floor plants, further developments are required so as to capture efficiently multi-floor arrangements, detailed single-floor layout together with safely related constraints and design/operating considerations. Fundamental modelling work will be undertaken on formulating mathematically the above aspects thus developing a number of mixed integer optimisation models. A significant component of the research programme will focus on the efficient solution of the mathematical models by investigating various solution approaches. Further improvement of proposed methodologies will be achieved through the solution of case studies from both the literature and the industrial partners of the CPSE consortium. The work described in the proposal will be carried out by one postgraduate and one research assistant.
