The proposed research will investigate the application of the emergent surface coating technique of Cold Gas Dynamic Spraying (CGDS) in the development of a novel near net shape metal deposition process- Cold Gas Dynamic Manufacturing (CGDM). The CGDM process will find application in sectors such as rapid prototyping, turbine component repair and mould tool modification & repair. The process will compete with traditional laser based processes. This non-thermal approach will allow a broader range of industrial alloys to be deposited more quickly, more accurately and with greater material integrity.An experimental CGDM apparatus will be developed and used to fully characterise the deposition process for a range of industrially relevant materials. The deposition process will be theoretically modelled and the model validated through trial. The inherent abrasive machining capability of the CGDS process will be investigated and its potential for shaping the deposited metal assessed. A helium recycling system will be developed to reduce theprocess dependence on bottled helium, thus ensuring economic/environmental viability. Sub-systems will be integrated to provide a demonstration CGDM apparatus. This project addresses fundamental, generic technology development -represents the first three years of an 8 year development programme. Subsequent application specific technology development is expected to be carried out under In Demand prior to process industrialisation. This far from marker research takes a unique & radical approach to a manufacturing problem and will impact upon many manufacturing sectors.
