Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is to fund a doctoral student to investigate chaotic advection in oscillatory environmental flows. Advective particle trajectories in quite simple oscillatory flows can describe extremely complex patterns (see e.g. Ottino 1997). This project will involve the development of accurate and efficient numerical models of passive and active tracer motions in advecting shallow flows. A novel Godunov-type shallow flow solver will be developed based on a new formulation of the hyperbolic matrix shallow water equations that properly balances flux gradient and source terms. For wave flows over ripples and tidal flows, the appropriate stream function and vorticity transport equations will be solved in curvilinear form. Intensive validation tests will be undertaken to assess accuracy and computational efficiency. The coupled flow and particle tracking models will be applied to typical environmental flows, including the motions of suspended particles (sediment and micro-organisms) due to wind-induced circulation in a shallow basin, sand transport over a rippled bed, and effluent plume evolution in a tidal flow. In all cases, the non-linear advection processes will be examined using Poincar plots, locations of stable and unstable manifolds, time-dependent motions of particle ensembles and estimates of the growth in mean distances between particles.
