Preliminary tests have shown that a commercial, non-porous carbon material can be used as an effective adsorbent. In addition, because of its high conductivity and low porosity the adsorbent can be regenerated electrochemically by anodic oxidation. This enables rapid, low cost, regeneration of the adsorbent at ambient temperature and pressure, and is thought to lead to the destruction of the adsorbed pollutant by oxidation. Compared to conventional treatments for these problem effluents the process offers the opportunity for an order of magnitude reduction in treatment costs with minimum or zero addition of chemicals. The project will examine the fate of the adsorbed pollutants, the relationships between the physico-chemical properties of the adsorbent, the regeneration process and the adsorption performance. Bench, laboratory and pilot scale systems will be constructed and tested. Pilot scale tests will be carried out on an industrial dyehouse effluent at Severn Trent Water's Hinkley treatment works.
