Because of its importance in applications such as motor engines, as well as its fundamental interest, the propagation of a premixed flame in a turbulent flow field has been consistently the subject of intensive investigations. However, there is still no consensus view about the dependence of the effective propagation speed of a premixed flame on the underlying flow field, even when the latter is assumed to be known.In this project, we propose a step-by-step approach to clarify this dependence, by considering prescribed flows of increasing complexities, which are characterised by two independent scale and intensity parameters. We shall identify and investigate the relevant distinguished regimes corresponding to these parameters, with the simultaneous aid of perturbation methods and direct numerical simulations. Special attention will be devoted to the effect of small scales on the flame, which is particularly poorly understood.The findings are expected to contribute to clarifying serious uncertainties in the literature (such as the validity of the Damkohler hypothesis), as well as to improving current computational tools (such as sub-grid models for Large-Eddy-Simulations) and available recent theories (such as the renormalisation group approach, particularly with regard to incorporation of small scale effects).
