|
The aim of the research if to produce a new reference book 'The Demand for Public Transport'. The original document was published by the Transport Research Laboratory in 1980. It was highly regarded, but is now out-of-date, particularly in the light of the significant changes in the public transport industry, such as the deregulation of local bus services in 1986 and the privatisation of the railways in the 1990's. In order to do this a consortium of researchers have set up a consortium to obtain funding and carry out the work. Great interest in this work has been expressed by the public transport industry. This interest has been demonstrated by the provision of matching funding.The project will include both the analyses of primary data, such as that from the National Travel Survey to analyse complex travel behaviour in the form of trip chains and data from electronic ticket machines, and secondary data from a variety of sources. The synthesis of secondary data will raise a number of important research issues such as the temporal and spatial stability of parameters, the transferability of parameters, the relationship between long and short term elasticity values, and the impact of exogenous factors on travel demand relative to endogenous ones.
