Summary on Grant Application Form |
Neutron beam time is requested in support of two PhD research projects, both will use neutron reflectometry and small angle neutron scattering. In the first the nature of the surface layer formed by end fluorinated polyethylene oxide adsorbed from aqueous solution to the air-water interface will be investigated using reflectometry. The extent to which this layer can be described as a brush will be examined and the findings correlated with parallel surface quasi-elastic light scattering on the same solutions. Small angle scattering will be used to determine the nature and dimensions of the aggregated species of this polymer that have been proposed to exist in solution. The second project is concerned with aqueous dispersions of micelles of linear-styrene-ethylene oxide diblock copolymers that have been stabilised by crosslinking the polystyrene cores. The organisation of these copolymers at the air-water interface will be obtained by reflectometry and compared with that for the unstabilised copolymers where a flattening of the cores has been observed. The dimensions of the micelle (core and corona) in the bulk dispersion will be obtained via small angle neutron scattering as well as the long range organisation for more concentrated dispersions. The crosslinked cores should not be as ductile as the unstabilised micelles and thus any deformation that is consequent from the repulsions between the micelles should be absent and may influence the long range organisation
