The benefits to society of low cost, high-area, organic solar cells would be enormous. Unfortunately, presently available organic PV materials do not provide the required efficiency of energy conversion for commercial viability due to poor conductivity of charge carriers and light energy. This proposal seeks to synthesise and study novel glass-forming phthalocyanine-centred oligo(arylamine)s (Fig.1b) designed as organic PV materials. It is anticipated that the oligo(arylamine) substituents will provide good hole transport properties and, therefore, oxygen (which is detrimental both to light energy transport and photostability) can be excluded from the materials during fabrication of the PV cell. Columnar self-ordering of the Pc cores within the glassy material, the absence of grain boundaries and the exclusion of oxygen will result in unhindered transport of excitons to the depletion layer. These properties, in combination with the exceptional photo-induced charge generation of Pc, should result in excellent PV materials.
