|
Key to the exploitation of a wired economy and the move towards 'the disappearing computer' is the availability of low-cost, high performance embedded computing systems. Current and projected design economics indicate that memory costs and especially flash memory costs dominate overall system costs and acts as a break to effective market deployment. Some researchers have considered that holding the stored data in compressed form offers the potential for reducing storage costs (& associated power consumption) by a factor of 2 to 3. The obstacle has always been the speed with which such information can be decompressed for the CPU has severely impacted on processing performance. With the recent availability of high-speed data Compressor cores, this obstacle no longer appears to restrict the concept. The purpose of this research is to establish the feasibility of such an approach, efficient architectural and software techniques for supporting it and to demonstrate feasibility through the design of such a system.
