Summary on Grant Application Form
A significant number of documents produced by blind people using word processors suffer from poor formatting in layout or due to inadvertent typing errors. This proposal is concerned with investigating the possibility of using additional training and a suite of tools to address this issue. This proposal is a pilot project intended to investigate the feasibility of the approach and the scale of the problem. If the approach is feasible and the scale of the problem as large as thought, a full-scale project will follow.A set of documents (restricted in this instance letters, faxes and memos), produced by blind people, will be analysed so that the formatting errors can be classified into groups. Some types of error may be addressed by training; and this approach will be evaluated. Other types of error may be detected and rectified by the use of tools; which will be developed as part of the project. These are likely to be in the form of 'Wizards' that assist with gross formatting and a checker (analogous to a word processor's spelling and grammar checker) that deals with inadvertent, typing errors. The tools will be evaluated with blind users. The tools will be made freely available.
