Summary on Grant Application Form |
This is a collaborative project that involves a team consisting of a chemist and experimental and theoretical material scientists. They will use model systems to understand the relationship between bonding of selected modifiers on alumina and their ability to protect the surface from corrosion. Attention will focus on the Basel face of alpha-A1203(0001) and the (0001) face of gamma-like alumina grown on NiAI(110). These are chosen on the basis of their availability, the background information on surface structure and prior experience of the investigators. In the UHV work at Manchester, guided by the modelling work at UCL, we will identify the bond sites and the configuration of targeted molecules and the effect of hydroxylation. These measurements will employ existing HREELS and STMIAFM instruments. The UHV results will be used to interpret the data from corrosion-related measurements at UMISTand Alcan, which involve lateral force AFM and the dynamic contact angle technique.
