The aim of this project is to explore the electrochemical properties of the gas phase by considering the ionised gaseous environment of a flame as a dilute electrolyte. Preliminary results have shown that electrochemical measurements can be made in flames and this project will provide further investigations.The presence of ions in flames presents a realistic prospect for performing electrochemical reactions at an electrode within a flame environment. The central principle on which much of this work is based, and indeed liquid electrochemistry, is the formation of an electrochemical potential at an electrode surface in contact with its ions in this case in the plasma. The thrust of this work is to apply the well established principles of electrochemistry in liquid and solid phases, to the gas phase. These principles may be divided into; investigation of electrochemical cells, the Nernst equation, and dynamic electrochemistry.The principles of electrochemistry should hold in the gas phase, however there will be subtle but very significant departures from the equivalent processes in liquids. The ultimate aim is to develop dynamic electrochemistry in gaseous plasma to build up a knowledge base that will eventually lead to industrially important applications.
