The spread of project work and demands for innovation are creating increasing pressures for the more intensive exploitation of the knowledge and learning generated by organizations. Existing approaches to Knowledge Management and project management are limited in their ability to capture the learning created by innovation projects. The proposed research will identify the key processes and mechanisms involved in capturing and re-using project-based learning across a range of business sectors. It will focus in particular on the roles played by project, process and team characteristics, knowledge management practices and informal networks. This will involve testing and refining a conceptual model and research instruments developed in an initial scoping study.The study will involve qualititative research within a sample of 12 process innovation project teams drawn from 6 different organizations to provide intrafirm and cross-sector comparisons. This will investigate the process of project learning capture and the interactions between key elements outlined above. This will be complemented by a quantitative, survey-based study of a much larger sample of project teams, which will aim to identify critical relationships between these key elements and consequent implications for the effectiveness of KM practices.
