Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposed research is based on the successful studies made in the ROPA project. The first part of this research is to enhance the ROPA microwave tomographic system for multiphase flow imaging with the design and construction of new imaging cells using air or de-ionised water as the background medium so that the new system can be applied to oil/gas flows as well as flows with high water content. New antennas will be designed for both air- and water- filled imaging cells to provide efficient radiation and electromagnetic coupling. Two new transmitting and receiving multiplexers will also be designed and constructed to improve the performance of the system. A unified approach will be taken to develop the software program for measurement control and new image reconstruction algorithms with water as the background medium using Microsoft Visual C++/Basic. Extensive studies and evaluation of the new microwave tomographic system will then be carried out using a miniature bench-top flow rig, and industrial trial testing of the system on flow rigs at SCR. The second part of this research is to investigate novel RF/microwave sensors for multiphase flow measurements. Helical line and coupled line sensors and helical line resonator sensors will be modelled, designed and constructed, and phase fraction determination models will be established. The sensors will also be tested and evaluated using the miniature bench-top flow rig and the industrial scale flow rig at SCR.
