Summary on Grant Application Form |
Although applications-driven spoken dialogue systems (DS) are a fast-growing area of R&D and some human-machine dialogue products are operational (e.g. the Dutch Philips Automatic Train Timetable Information System) the UK and the English-speaking world generally lack such products, and developments have been hampered by the paucity of enabling resources, notably corpora. Important first steps are (a) the collection of a sufficiently varied corpus of relevant dialogues, and (b) the development of a sufficiently general annotation system for task-driven dialogue acts. In this pilot project step (a) will be achieved with the help of two industrial providers, and step (b) will be achieved by cue-based progressive automation of the annotation process. A pre-requisite to (b) will the determination of a dialogue-act tagset, based on an assessment of existing tagsets and their applicability to the corpus data. Given the variety of task-oriented dialogue data, the goal will be to devise an annotation system sufficiently generic to be applicable to new domains, yet sufficiently specific to capture the individual characteristics of particular applications.
