It is proposed to hold a suspension of nanotubes (or nanopipes) between two electrodes in an impedance matched cell and to photoexcite the semiconducting tubes (pipes) with a sub nanosecond laser pulse. The generation of carriers across the semiconductor bandgap and their motion along the tube in an applied field will result in a transient photocurrent due to a Maxwell displacement current. Measurement of such transients will allow determination of the intrinsic charge transport properties of the tubelpipe while avoiding the substantial problem of making electrical contact with the nanotubes themselves.Sub-nanosecond temporal resolution of the transients will be achieved by implementing an adaptation of the Auston switch technique successfully used for conventional semiconductors. The proposed adaptation has already been demonstarted on polymer chains in solution.By cutting the nanotubes into shorter nanopipes and observing the change in the transients information will be gained on the defect density on the nanotubes. In particular, once the nanopipe is shorter than the interdefect separation it will be possible to relate the form of the current transient to the carrier velocity.
