The research team will work closely with four industrial partners, who will take an active role in the research process, which will include the implementation of company-specific frameworks during the life of the project. The theoretical results will be encapsulated in generic conceptual frameworks and the methodology, implementation process and computer models and simulations will all be available in the public domain through the web and a Management Handbook. The theoretical assumptions will be tested and refined. A multi-disciplinary group of International Advisors from academia and business will contribute different perspectives, knowledge and expertise.The project will use collaborative action research involving specific pilot studies, semi-structured interviews, in-company and inter-organisational workshops. The pilot studies will explore new ways of working and relating which may emerge from the existing organisation, and may be different from the dominant culture. We will work with Rolls-Royce Marine, following the merger with Vickers, to facilitate the integration of business and national cultures (e.g. UK and Scandinavia), ICT systems, supplier chains and technical knowledge; with BT's Brightstar incubator of new ventures to facilitate the creation of new sustainable enterprises; and with Shell Finance Services on at least two restructuring pilots. A fourth industrial partner will be recruited within the first six months.
