Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall aim of the proposed research is to establish sound scientific principles to guide the resolution of pie single optical isomers (or enantiomers) via the formation and selective crystallization of diastereomer adducts.Molecular modelling will be carried out to predict the structures and lattice energies of diastereomer salts, and to analyse their conformation, intermolecular forces, and packing characteristics. Experimental work will be undertaken to obtain structural data for diastereomer pairs, and to determine their separation behaviour. Further thermodynamic data will also be measured to characterise the phase diagram, and to determine whether phase behaviour may be correlated with other, simply determinable quantities. The process parameters that may determine the dynamic crystallization behaviour and product quality for diastereomers showing favourable phase relationships will also be investigated, to establish the principles by which an effrcieM separation process may be carried out.The results wilt be analysed to identify consistent trends that will facilitate the selection of resolving agents for particular types of substrate (recemate) compound and adduction behaviour
