Summary on Grant Application Form |
Recent experimental results obtained Using the methods of resonant x-ray scattering have shed new light 011 the structure of antiferroelectric liquid crystals. These call for a re-evaluation of the models that have been used to predict the behave behaviour of these materials. It is proposed to develop a collaboration in which the methods of analytical theory and molecular modelling ,ire applied in the light of the experimental results to develop new model Hamiltonians for the microscopic description of the various phases of antiferroelectric liquid crystals. This collaboration will begin with the three-month stay in Manchester of a Visiting Fellow has experience in the application of theoretical models to the study of non-linear behaviour in liquid crystals. The research will initially focus on the nature of the interaction between adjacent smectic layers. and the evaluation of tile relative roles of entropy and enthalpy in determining the forces that tend to induce anticlinic ordering.
