Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research aims to develop new types of finite element for the periodic form of Maxwell's equations, using H and E as field variables, which will remove the current limitation of about 10 nodes (or more) per wavelength for accurate modelling of scattered waves. It will incorporate these in a state of the art finite element program. Error indicators and adaptivity will be included. The new programme will be used to analyse realistic problems of wave scattering by aircraft and ships. In addition, to validate these new and speculative methods, the existing Swansea program will be applied to the same scattering problems at a range of moderate frequencies. Such comparisons will give confidence in the procedures. The existing state of the art mesh generation software available at Swansea will be used to generate appropriate meshes around the aircraft. If the comparisons are satisfactory, the modelling will be pushed into the very high frequency range, with wavelengths of the order of cm.
