Summary on Grant Application Form |
The requested funds are for the purchase of a new X-ray diffraction facility to substantially enhance the department's small-molecule X-ray diffraction capability and allow the development of several new projects. The current single facility of an ageing 4-circle Rigaku AFC6S cannot meet the current and future needs of the department for modem and rapid collection of X-ray data. It is particularly the synthetic chemists, notably the BioinorganiGSupramolecular, Organometallic and Organic research groups of the department who will benefit most from the new facility. A new facility will underpin new research proposals in: a) synthetic models of solvent channels in metalloenzymes, b) synthetic models of substrate binding in metalloenzymes, c) synthesis of new magnetic materials: towards magnetic liquid crystals, d) models for non-transferrin bound iron, e) supramolecular photochemistry, f) the cis-dioxo-Mo(VI)-unit as a new building block in metal directed self-assembly and g) structure function correlations in homogeneous catalysis and h) the synthesis and screening of natural and novel antibiotic/anticancer agents. Several proposals are linked to funded research programmes while other represent new iniatives.
