Summary on Grant Application Form |
The prime purpose of this present proposal is the scientific commissioning of the new RF pSR spectrometer which was constructed at the ISIS Pulsed Muon Facility during a recent EPSRC funded project. Novel muon spin resonance techniques and new equipment will be developed and these used to explore how resonance methods can extend the scope of traditional pSR measurements. A collaboration of four university groups will use these new methods to develop scientific applications of RF pSR, in many cases building on the 'proof of principle' measurements carried out during the earlier research project. The expertise of two world experts (as visiting fellows) in gas phase pSR (D.G. Fleming, University of British Columbia, Canada) and the structure of muonium substituted free radicals (R.M. Macrae, University of Notre Dame, USA) will greatly contribute to the research. These commissioning experiments will stimulate interest in magnetic resonance methods among NSR researchers and bring these novel pSR techniques to the attention of the wider research community. As part of the muon user facility at ISIS, the RF spectrometer and specialist equipment will be available to the worldwide scientific community.
