Summary on Grant Application Form |
The dilute Bose-Einstein condensate provides a model system for studying key issues relating to quantum fluids. One key issue involves the interactions between vortices and sound, and their role in the decay of turbulence and the equilibrium properties of quantum fluids at finite temperature. The aim of the proposal is to make a comprehensive study of vortex-sound interactions using the Gross-Pitaevskii model. This approach compliments other theoretical descriptions of quantum fluids, such as the vortex filament model, due to its ability to explicitly describe processes such as vortex formation and vortex reconnections. W e aim to provide a complete description of sound emission due to vortex reconnections and vortex motion, and the absorption and scattering of sound by vortex structures. This description will be applied to improve the current understanding of complex phenomena such as the decay of superfluid turbulence and the conversion of vortex energy into heat in the context of superfluid liquid helium and dilute atomic condensates.
