Summary on Grant Application Form
The general problem of Al planning is PSPACE-complete and it is threfore improtant to identify heuristic strategies to help manage search. One such way is to identity hinmtd about tyhe order in whi9ch planning goals and sub-goals should be addressed. The results of some preliminary work conducted by the prinicpal investigator has shown the potential of identifying landmarks -- important planning sub-goals --- and then ordering them to help focus a planner on a progressive path towards in a solution. In this project the main aim is to build on this preliminary work to investigate3 the identification and ordering of landmarks in Al problems and to explore their impact on the performance of Al planning systems.During the research the preliminary work will be extended to remove simplifying assumptions, to handle richer planning languages and to consider a wider range of planning architectures. It is anticipated that the results of this research will be of wide interest amongst the academic Al planning community and the community of users of planning technology.
