Summary on Grant Application Form |
During this two month visit recent data obtained at the University of Alabama, using fast pulse field switching techniques, will be compared directly with comparable data on thermal decay effects and fast reversal measurements undertaken at York. This will involve considerations of the best mechanism available to measure the actual switched magnetisation in a sample exposed to a non saturating field. Techniques to be considered are the use of hall probes, which is the technique currently used in Alabama, and magneto-optic techniques, which are being developed in York. Also to be considered will be the best ways to generate the high pulsed fields necessary to achieve a reasonable percentage of switching in the material without the use of excessive DC biased fields. In particular an experimental programme looking at the effect of the DC biased field in both longitudinal and perpendicular media will be undertaken. Also, recent theoretical developments in the subject will be considered and discussions held with other workers in the field, notably at Manchester, Glasgow and Durham, with regard to the best approach for the modelling of switching effects in the perpendicular mode.
